My Late Father

Some drawings are created because a subject inspires you. Others are created because the subject means everything to you.

This charcoal portrait of my father is one of those drawings.

He passed away in 2021, and creating this piece gave me an opportunity to remember him in a very personal way. Working in charcoal allowed me to focus on the things that matter most in a portrait: light, shadow, expression and character.

There is something particularly fitting about charcoal for a piece like this. The simplicity of the medium strips everything back and leaves the focus on the person. Every mark became part of the process of remembering him.

For me, this is more than a charcoal drawing. It is a personal tribute to my father and a lasting reminder of the man he was, the memories we shared and the place he will always have in my life.
