Selt Portrait

A Graphite self portrait and a personal exploration of identity, expression and the way we see ourselves.

Creating a portrait of someone else is one thing. Turning the same focus on yourself is quite different. This piece gave me the opportunity to step back from simply capturing a likeness and explore how light, shadow and expression can reveal something of the person behind the image.

I also sometimes like to hide small messages or details within my work. In this portrait, the IV II on my top is a personal reference to the age I was when I created the drawing: 4 and 2 = 42.

And yes, I’m fully aware that IV II isn’t technically the correct way to write 42 in Roman numerals :-)
