A Small Constellation of Freckles

This portrait is particularly special to me because it is of my daughter, Evie.

I wanted to create something that captured more than simply what she looks like. When you know someone as well as you know your own child, it is often the smallest details that make them instantly recognisable. In Evie's case, her freckles are one of those details.

The title, A Small Constellation of Freckles, came from the way those individual marks sit across her face. Like stars in a night sky, each one is small on its own, but together they become part of the character and identity of the person.

Working in graphite allowed me to concentrate on those details without the distraction of colour. Every shadow, highlight and individual mark became important, creating a portrait that feels quiet and intimate.

More than anything, this is simply a portrait of my daughter at a particular moment in her life. As children grow and change so quickly, creating something like this feels like a way of capturing a moment in time that can be kept forever.
